Walter Gaston Harkey, Sr., of Albemarle passed away Wednesday, May 18, 2016 at Trinity Place.? His funeral service will be graveside at 2 PM Friday, May 20, 2016 in Fairview Memorial Park with Rev. Tony Allen officiating.? The family will receive from 12:00 Noon until 1:30 at Stanly Funeral and Cremation Care in Albemarle.
Born November 15, 1918 in Stanly County, NC he was the son of the late Fred Gaines Harkey and Myrtle Snuggs Harkey and was a retired Captain with the Albemarle Fire Department.? Mr. Harkey was of the Baptist Faith and was a veteran of the 5th Army Medical Detachment during WWII serving in in North Africa and Italy.? He was one of the cofounders of Harmancos.
Mr. Harkey was preceded in death by his wife Betty Chandler Harkey.? Survivors include two sons Walter G. Harkey Jr. and wife Gay of Norwood, Kent C. Harkey and wife Edna of Albemarle, 4 grandchildren W. Gaston Harkey III and wife Shannon, Katie Harkey Hinson and husband Dane, Chandler R. Harkey and wife Natalie, and Anna Christian Harkey, as well as 3 great-grandchildren Evan Marcus Hinson, Jace Walter Hinson, and Ransom Clifford Harkey.
In keeping with Mr. Harkey?s longstanding breakfast routine, in lieu of memorials the family requests that you invite a friend or firefighter to breakfast.
