Michael Anthony Carlson's Obituary
Michael Anthony “Mike” Carlson, 61, of Albemarle, passed away on Sunday, February 1, 2026, at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
A funeral service will be held at 3:30 PM on Sunday, February 15, 2026, at McAuley Memorial Gardens in Mt. Gilead, with Pastor Ron Loflin officiating.
Born December 3, 1964, in Fairbanks, Alaska, Mike was the son of the late Anthony C. Carlson and Patricia Louise Weitzel Simington. He attended Sutherland Community School and later proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps, training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, California, with Second Battalion, Platoon 2051. His time in the Marines remained a source of great pride throughout his life.
Following his military service, Mike continued his commitment to serving others as a Deputy with the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office, where he faithfully served for 15 years before retiring. He carried himself with strength, dedication, and a deep sense of duty to both his profession and his community.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Mary and William Houldson, and his aunt, Janie Schossow.
Those left to cherish his memory include his loving daughter, Mikayla Carlson of Albemarle; his beloved girlfriend, Christal Martin of Albemarle; his step-son, Dontez (Savana); and his treasured grandchildren, Ella and Nyx McLendon of Star, North Carolina. He is also survived by his brother, Corey Simington (Denise) of South Bend, Indiana; his aunt, Sandy Brady of Chandler, Arizona; his uncle, Gary Houldson of Storm Lake, Iowa; and many extended family members and friends.
Mike will be remembered for his loyalty, strength, and steadfast love for his family. His life was marked by service — to his country, his community, and to those he held dear.
