Marvin ""Blackie"" Williams' Obituary
After 93 life filled years on this earth, Marvin "Blackie" Williams of Monroe, went home on December 13, 2014 to be with the Lord and the many friends and family who had gone before him. Blackie's life was characterized by hard work, hard headedness, loyalty, and a strong moral code. And no one could ever forget his unique ability to turn a phrase. Blackie often had all who loved him in stitches with his perfect Southern colloquialisms. After a stint in the Navy as a young man, he returned home and opened a pool hall across from Wingate College. There he spent years mentoring and shaping the lives of many young men, several of whom maintained lifelong friendships with him due to the powerful impact he had on their youth. Blackie spent the rest of his days as a turkey farmer, enjoying his beautiful land, gardening, watching ball games, and loving his family.
Blackie was preceded in death by his parents, John and Bryte Williams, his brothers, John Williams Jr. and Ralph Williams, his first wife, Lucille Curry Williams, daughter, Sally Williams, stepdaughter Marti Dixon, and great grandson, Zyler McNabb.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Winchester Williams, daughters Anna "Tootie" Broome and Susan Williams and stepson, David Dixon. Grandsons, Danny Mills, Mike Mills and his wife Sandy, Bill Williams and his wife Danielle, also survive him. Additionally, he is survived by his granddaughters, Maribeth Broome, Blake Blackman and her husband Jason. He also has two nieces, Lynn Haubert and Margaret Crot.
Blackie also has 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 5:30 Thursday, December 18, 2014 at Davis Funeral Home in Monroe, Dr. Derrill Smith officiating. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the charity of your choice.
