John Sanford Nance Jr.'s Obituary
John Sanford Nance Jr., 94, of Indian Trail passed away on September 23, 2024 at Atrium Health Mercy Hospital. His funeral service will be 3 PM on Sunday, September 29, 2024 at Lee Park Baptist Church with Pastor Chris Justice officiating. Burial will follow in the Ritch Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church from 2 until 2:45 PM prior to the hour of the service.
Born November 8, 1929 in Mecklenburg County, he was the son of the late John Sanford Nance Sr. and Ethel Hall Nance. He was a graduate of Central High School in Charlotte, NC in 1947 and later graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Bachelor’s Degree. He furthered his education at Emory University, in Atlanta, GA receiving a Master’s Degree in Pharmacy. He owned Matthews Pharmacy for many years and later worked for S & R Wrecker Service. He was a Veteran of the US Marine Corp having served in the Korean Conflict. Mr. Nance put his family first and foremost, and was always visiting and caring for other people. He was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He enjoyed spending time outdoors and mowing grass for his family and others. His yearly garden was something he enjoyed. As a devoted father and grandfather, Mr. Nance was always there for his children’s and grandchildren’s school activities and sporting events.
He was preceded in death by his of wife 37 years, Betty Lambert Nance. Surviving family members include daughter Georgia Christine Cupp and husband Bill of Indian Trail, David Lewis Nance and wife Wendy of Indian Trail, Roland Sanford Nance and wife Lisa of Monroe, grandchildren Milana Marie Nance, Alissa Christine Nance, David Lewis Nance Jr., Billy Jack Cupp, Jacob Sanford Nance, Kenneth Logan Nance, John Douglas “J.D.” Cupp, Nolan Rich Nance, Reagan Grace Nance, Will Cupp, and Becky Cupp, great-grandchildren William David Escobar, Bonnie Christine Orr, Sophia Marie Escobar, Liam Jedrzejewski, and Luke Jedrzejewski. He was preceded in death by two brothers James Nance and Mack Nance, grandson Jack Douglas Cupp and granddaughter Carrie Halecky.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, 100 VFW Lane, Indian Trail, NC 28079 or to Back to Bethel Baptist Church, 3606 Sanford Ln, Monroe, NC 28110.
