Guy Hammill's Obituary
Guy Hammill of Richfield passed peacefully in the early hours of January 1, 2021 at Stanly Memorial Hospital. He was born August 10, 1930 in Badin NC to Eva Wagoner Hammill and Richard H. Hammill. Guy graduated with the Richfield High School Class of 1948 where he met his wife of 65 years, Louise Almond Hammill. He went on to serve our country in the final year of the Korean war in both combat and support roles earning combat infantryman and 2 bronze stars. He worked for Blythe Brothers of Charlotte and later as an independent road construction contractor hauling and paving. He helped build the Eisenhower Interstate Highway system and other key parts of the nation?s infrastructure from Virginia to Georgia, working on such notable projects as the Petersburg to Richmond Turnpike and Interstate 95. He was also part of the crew that paved the Charlotte Motor Speedway. He was thankful for his coworkers and suppliers who were also his lifelong friends. Guy contributed countless hours to Richfield United Methodist Church serving as a trustee working to build, update, and maintain the church building and keep the small but faithful congregation active.. He was a valued member of the community and was counted on to fix and build almost anything, often refusing payment for his services to farmers and neighbors who were also friends. He left his mark on the Gold Hill Historic Mining Park where his Great Grandfather from England had worked in the 1830s, restoring machinery for display and preserving this part of our history.. He truly believed that it was more blessed to give than to receive and gave freely of his time and talents. His family and friends were blessed and inspired by his determination and problem solving. Guy was a fan of NASCAR and of the Atlanta Braves. A very popular Christmas present in the family was a new transistor radio that got used once a week listening to Sunday afternoon races. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and had many great memories shared with friends and family around fishing trips. He was part of a winning tractor pulling team helping tune that little extra horsepower from a ?stock? John Deere tractor and later built a winning lawn pulling tractor which he and son Brian ran in the local circuit. He was a loving and relentless caregiver for his wife in her final years. Special thanks to his caregivers Terri, Cathy, and Teresa and to neighbors and faithful friends who were the angels who made his final months so much better.
He is survived by his son Brian and wife Kelli and granddaughter Emily of Raleigh, sisters Clara Jean Whitley of Harrisburg and Mildred Lyerly of Concord, 10 Nephews and 4 Nieces. He was preceded in death by his wife Louise, Brothers Don, James, and Fred Hammill and Sister Rena Bost.
