George Elwood Denning's Obituary
Mr. George Elwood Denning, age 92, of Monroe, North Carolina, passed away peacefully Thursday, January 8, 2015.
Funeral Services to Celebrate the Life of George Denning will be conducted at 2:00 PM Sunday, January 11, 2015, at Davis Funeral Chapel, officiated by Reverend Richard Johnson. Interment will follow at Lakeland Memorial Park.
He was born August 19, 1922 in Wellsville, New York. He was one of five children born to Olivia Devicie Fowler and Arthur Monroe Denning. After the loss of his mother at an early age, his father married Aein, which brought thirteen additional siblings to the family.
After serving in the Third Army during World War II under General Patton he returned to Wellsville, New York to marry Nora Lee Knight, who he had met while in basic training at Camp Sutton, Monroe, North Carolina. After spending thirteen years in Wellsville, they moved to Monroe, North Carolina.
George is survived by his loving wife of 70 years Nora Lee and by his three children, Ondrea Gale Moore, James Arthur (Jim) Denning & wife Rebecca (Becky), Betty Susanna (Susie) McCoy & husband Kenneth; and six grandchildren Tamela (Tammy) Williams, James (Jimmy) Denning, Jr., Olivia McCoy, Timothy (Tim) Denning, Cynthia McCoy, and Emily Fancher. Also seven great grandchildren Zachary, Dillon, Zoey, Colton, EJ, Madeline, and Casey. He also leaves behind scores of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
George enjoyed many years as a welder for Fruehauf Company. George was an enthusiastic fishing and hunting fan. He spent many happy days on the lakes in North Carolina and South Carolina. George and Nora are members at West Monroe Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM Sunday, January 11, 2015, prior to the funeral service at the Davis Funeral Home Chapel, 1003 East Franklin Street, Monroe, NC 28112.
