David George Price's Obituary
David George Price died March 19, 2015 at his home. He was born December 25, 1929 in Waynesville, N.C.
Dave graduated from Waynesville Township High School and received his Masters degree from Western Carolina University. He served four years in the U.S. Navy aboard the PCS1423 during the Korean War.
He began his teaching career at Davidson Jr. High but moved to South Mecklenburg in 1959, where he taught and coached for twenty-six years. He coached several different sports during his tenure but settled in as Varsity Basketball Coach in 1964. South Meck won four state championships while he was there. He was selected to coach the East-West All-Star game in 1972, and in 1976, he was appointed to the Medalist Sports Advisory Board and received the Distinguished Service Award as President of the NCAA Southwestern Conference. During this time, Dave was bestowed Knight of the Queen City by Mayor John Belk. In 1985, Dave retired from public school education and went to Providence Day as Varsity Basketball Coach. While there, the Chargers won two State Championships. He was named NCISBA Coach of the year in 1985.
Dave Price had been a member of Pineville United Methodist Church for fifty-six years. He served the church and his Lord in many capacities with faithfulness and joy. He was currently a member of the Administrative Council and the John Wesley Sunday School Class. He enjoyed golfing with his friends and being surrounded by his family.
He is survived by his wife Gloria Starnes Price; one son, Michael Price (Cindy); four daughters: Susan Hood (Michael), Julie Hilton (Rick), Lori Tompkins (Robert), Amy Haugh (Stephen); 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his brothers Ned Price (Janie), Bill Price; sister, Betty Mead (Ken), and sister-in-law Sandra Price. Dave was preceded in death by his parents Cordell and Joe Edna Culbertson Price and a brother John Price.
A funeral ceremony will be held to celebrate the life of David Price at 2:00 pm on Sunday, March 22nd at Pineville United Methodist Church, 110 S. Polk Street, Pineville, NC. Receiving begins at 12:30 in the church's Crossroads Center. Family and friends will gather for interment at 4:00 at Bethlehem United Methodist Church, 5300 Nesbit Road, Waxhaw, NC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Pineville United Methodist Church.
