I've known Dwight since I was big enough to walk to his family's store with my mother. Growing up, my father became disabled when I was eight and there was eight of us children, so times were hard for us after Dad's accident. Many times money would run out and so would supplies and even food, but we could always depend on Dwight's family to carry us through till Daddy's next check would come in. Also, on quite a few Christmases, Norwood First Methodist Church would bring boxes of not only clothing and other daily need items, but also they made sure all of us got toys and once I remember how excited we were to get a bicycle we could all share. I later learned that Dwight had a hand in all the church had done for us which I will always remember and always be so very grateful. I guess I was about 10 when I told Mom and Dad that I wanted to write the church a thank you letter. She said that would be a. nice thing to do and that she would mail it for me if I wrote it in my own words. The next time I saw Dwight at the store, he told me that it was such a nice letter that it was posted on the church bulletin board for the whole church congregation to read. I was so proud. I guess what I am trying to say is that I will never forget how kind he always was to not only me, but my entire family. Because of his family's kindness, our family felt loved and supported. If I had to choose just one word to describe Dwight Smith, that word would be "kind". And the good Lord knows that we sure could use a whole heap more of that in this world. He will be sorely and truly missed.
