Walter Ray Stegall's Obituary
Walter Ray Stegall, 82, of Monroe, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 6, 2026, at the Union County Hospice House.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, at Prospect Methodist Church, with Pastor Eddie Powers officiating. Burial will follow in the Prospect Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service.
Born February 11, 1943, in Union County, North Carolina, Walter was the son of the late Floyd Stegall and Rose Helms Stegall. He was a retired tool and die maker whose strong work ethic and dedication were evident throughout his life. Walter proudly served his country as a veteran of both the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard.
A man of deep faith, Walter was a devoted member of Sandy Ridge Baptist Church, where he served faithfully as a deacon for several terms. His walk with Christ was central to his life, and he was known for his honesty, accountability, and willingness to walk alongside others in faith-as a sponsor, accountability partner, and friend. Those who knew him best remember him as a complex but sincere man: a devoted son, loving husband, caring father, and committed Christian whose life reflected both conviction and compassion.
Walter is survived by his beloved wife, Tommie Melton Stegall; three sons, Wally Vic Stegall of Michigan, Eric Stegall (Lynn) of Monroe, and Denny Stegall (Kelly) of Monroe; and seven cherished grandchildren, Jamie Stegall, Kimber Stegall, Leah Stegall, Jenna Stegall, Gethsemani Feria-Stegall (her mother, Lisa Stegall), Bilha Feria, and Jaime Feria.
In addition to his parents, Walter was preceded in death by his siblings, Dean Wallace, Ruth Harris, Shirley Simpson, Floyd J. Stegall, and Linda West, and by his grandson, Jackson Stegall.
Walter's legacy of faith, service, and perseverance will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
