Virginia Haywood Skidmore's Obituary
Virginia Haywood “Ginny” Skidmore, 83, of Park Ridge Rd in Albemarle, died Wednesday, January 12, 2022 at Atrium Health-Stanly from complications due to Covid. A public viewing will be on Saturday, January 15 from 9 till 12 at Stanly Funeral & Cremation Care in Albemarle. A celebration of her life will be held in the future for the health and safety of those who wish to attend.
Born December 24, 1938 in Mt. Gilead, NC, she is the daughter of the late Johnie and Ina Haywood. She is also preceded in death by her loving husband, Bill Skidmore in 2013. Ginny is survived by her sons Eric Skidmore (Trina) of Albemarle and Kevin Skidmore (Ann) of Norwood; daughter, Lisa Rhyne (David) of Clinton, TN; six grandchildren, Lauren Dermody (Robby) of Chapel Hill, Doug Skidmore (fiancé Victoria) of Maiden, Chris Skidmore (Rebecca) of Fleetwood, Cameron Skidmore of Durham, Elizabeth and Charlie Rhyne of Clinton, TN, and step-grandson David Rhyne, Jr of Clinton, TN. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Emerson and Rhodes Dermody of Chapel Hill, her brothers, Dr. Jerry Haywood (Jean) of Williamsburg, VA, Kent Haywood of Winston Salem, and her sister, Donna Burleson (Terry) of Mt. Gilead.
Ginny was a member of First Baptist Church in Albemarle where she taught 4 and 5 year-old children’s Sunday School for over 40 years and sang in the choir for over 30 years. She worked for many years teaching preschool at First Presbyterian Church in Albemarle. Ginny also worked as secretary at First Baptist Church in Albemarle, Stanly Community College and Badin Elementary School.
Ginny’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the joy of her life. For over 33 years she watched them grow up and loved them throughout every moment and they loved her. She enjoyed attending their many sporting events and school activities and was always a supportive and caring “Nana.”
Ginny graduated salutatorian of her class from Mt. Gilead High School. She really loved her flowers and cooking for her family. All you had to do was drive by her house and look at her yard. When not working in the yard you could find her in the kitchen cooking for her family. She was a great cook and cherished the opportunity to gather around the table to eat and talk with her family. Her love of family was evident in everything she did.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church in Albemarle at 202 N. Second St. Albemarle, NC 28001.
