Verna Lee Catoe's Obituary
Mrs. Verna Lee Melton Catoe, age 91, of Monroe, NC passed away Tuesday, May 10, 2016 at her home. She was born on January 19, 1925 in Union County, NC, the daughter of Isom Lee Melton and Isadora Almetta Hinson Melton. She grew up on a farm in the Prospect Community.
Mrs. Catoe attended Prospect High School and King's Business College. She worked as a bookkeeper at Southern Gas Company, later Piedmont Natural Gas, until she retired. Her main work, however, was devoted to her church, community and anyone in need. She attended Prospect United Methodist all her life, except during the fifties and sixties, when she was active at Benton Heights United Methodist.
She loved to visit and take home prepared meals to the sick and elderly. She was an excellent gardener, seamstress, and then artist in her retirement. She was devoted to her four children and two grandchildren and any who needed her help. Her life was guided by her faith and kindness.
Mrs. Catoe is survived by her two daughters and their husbands, Mrs. Katherine Rorie and her husband, Buck, of Matthews; Mrs. Paula Crabill and her husband, Chris, of Monroe; her son, Mr. Gary Mitchell Price of Lancaster; South Carolina; her grandson, Mr. Ian Crabill and his wife, April, of Adel, Georgia; her granddaughter, Megan Rorie Frers and her husband, Christopher, of Charlotte; two great-grandchildren, Samuel and Eilidh Jane Crabill of Adel, Georgia. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Mrs. Eugene Melton (Ruth) of Lancaster, South Carolina.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Dewey Turner Catoe, and her son, Mr. Colby Leon Price; brothers, Crayton Melton, Codus Melton, Steve Melton, Eugene Melton, Isom Lee Melton, Jr. (Buck) and Kenneth Melton.
The family would like to thank all the dedicated caretakers for their kindness, concern, love and attention they provided Mrs. Catoe over the years.
The family will receive friends between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 12, at Davis Funeral Service in Monroe. The funeral service will be held at Prospect United Methodist Church on Friday, May 13, at 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
