Vera Needham Sherrell's Obituary
A very precious woman walked into the arms of Jesus on Wednesday morning, December 23, 2020. Vera Mae Sherrell passed away in the home of her daughter, Sheila Carlis, where she was living while under hospice care. Vera was 94 years old.
Vera was preceded in death by her husband, Sylvan Sherrell; her parents, Arthur and Flossie Mae Needham; sisters, Virginia Pickens and Ruth Fitzpatrick; brother, Charles Needham; and daughter, Verna Gail Gilliam.
Vera is lovingly remembered and cherished by her five children, Rita (Tom) Mroczek of Vancouver, WA, Millie (Jim) Cichon of Pearce, AZ, Sheila (Gene) Carlis of Badin, NC, Arthur (Lisa) Hall of Albemarle, NC and Curtis Hall of Gold Hill, NC. She will also be remembered and deeply missed by 21 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Vera was the last remaining member of her immediate family.
Vera was born at home in Carbondale, Illinois on October 29, 1926. She was the oldest of four children and attended a one room school house for the first eight years of her education. She then went on to Carbondale Community High School. Vera worked as a seamstress before she was married in 1946 at the age of 19. She gave birth to six children ? 4 girls and 2 boys. She was a stay-at-home mom for most of her child rearing years, but did begin work as a seamstress again for quite a few years after her youngest son was born. She was a very dedicated and loving mother to her children right up until her death. Vera was also very dedicated to her Lord and loved to study the Bible. Until recently, she was a faithful attender at Badin Baptist Church where she is remembered as a ?Godly woman and giver of the warmest hugs.? She greatly loved her church and her church family. Vera also enjoyed the outdoors, camping, reading, doing word puzzles, playing games and visiting with her friends and family. She loved her grandchildren dearly and didn?t hesitate to spoil them whenever she had the opportunity.
A visitation will take place at Stanly Funeral and Cremation Care, Albemarle location, on Saturday, January 9th at 2 pm. A funeral service will follow in the chapel at 3 pm. Upon conclusion of the funeral service a graveside committal will take place at New London Cemetery.
