Richard Dillon Simpson, 85, of Bryan, TX, formerly of Monroe, NC and Huntsville, TX passed away on March 10, 2018 at his son's residence in Denver, Colorado. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, April 6 at 3 PM at Our Lady of Lourdes, 725 Deese Street, Monroe, NC 28112. A reception will be held immediately following the service. Interment will follow at Grace United Methodist Church Cemetery, 3522 Secrest Short Cut Road, Monroe, NC 28110 on his family plot. Richard was born on April 19, 1932, in Monroe, NC, the son of the late William B. and Ada L. (Goins) Simpson. Richard served in the US Air Force from 1951-1955 and obtained the rank of Airman First Class. He was stationed at the Bryan, TX Air Force base. While serving, he perfected the ejection system on the F86 jet fighter. After he left the Air Force he worked for a short time as a Prudential insurance agent. Later he became a district manager for Redman Industries at their Alenco company where he worked for over 30 years. He was responsible for setting up and servicing sales distributors for their hydraulic cranes. In future years with them he became head of the drafting department and created their sales brochures for their custom built windows. He also designed, built and set up Alenco's window displays at expositions around the country. Richard had many talents including drawing caricatures, woodworking, making home movies with his family, filming weddings, dancing most Friday and Saturday nights and playing the guitar, banjo and harmonica. Between 1977-1982 he played bass guitar in two different western bands: The Trailblazers and The Country 5. There wasn't a mechanical problem that he couldn't fix, or a structure that he couldn't build. He literally built two homes all by himself and created a how-to video about his experience. One of his favorite quotes was "I have had very little experience in making the same mistake twice." Richard was a man of great character, kindness, ingenuity, talent, and humor. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 7 older siblings: Loyce, Elbert, Kathleen, Ruth, Euard, Donnie, and Jack Richard was formerly married to Barbara J (Regmund) Milder and they have 7 children, 14 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and one great grandchild on the way in July. Richard's children and their families are as follows: Richard (Adalia Gonzalez) Simpson and daughters Sigrid (Saulo Ferreira) and Kay. Resa Simpson Hersel (Jeryl Gozy) and her children Keith (Susana Casas) Hersel and children Lorelei, Dylan. Kristy (Jarred) Cathers and children Lexie, Alyssa, Wesley. Andrew (Tina Mohammed) Hersel and children Jonah, Scarlett. Michael (Amber Boils) Hersel and children Sophia, Noah. Amy Simpson (Mark) Johnson. Steve Simpson and daughter Meghan. Jack (Fawn Benson) Simpson and children Brandon Wright, Zackry, Madison, Bessie, Vivian. Matt (Sandra Layfield) Simpson and daughter Amanda Hand and her daughter Mackenna. Mark (GiGi Kizer) Simpson and his daughters Beth and Brianna. Richard also leaves behind many nieces and great nieces and nephews and great nephews.
