I was sad to learn in the last wingate university Magazine that Mrs. Walker had passed. In 1971 at wingate she was my English Professor and what a wonderful, caring and the best English professor.we stayed in contact for many years. We saw each other in the summer of 2003 at wingate when I helped chaperone the youth and my kids to passport camp.She looked great. We had a real good visit.i am so glad she continued to teach English for many years..We continued by mail and the last letter I got was an amazing letter about living for the Lord first priority.I knew she had RA but that did not stop her.you all, her husband, her children and grandchildren and siblings are the most blessed.I loved her greatly.my only regret is that wingate college at that time was Only 2 years.if wingate had been 4 years wow!!! What i could have learned from her About life and my savior..Thank you for sharing her to all. Ms Walker was one of the great lights of my college experience. She literally kept me from giving up on it all after a rough encounter with another professor. Her encouragement and willingness to support me even resulted in me becoming an English major. She was an excellent instructor, but she was a friend. I was inspired by her commitment to teach despite rheumatoid arthritis. She never seemed to quit. I was deeply thankful for her spiritual guidance and she always checked on me, even when I wasn't in her classes. She did the registry at my wedding and I considered it such an honor to have her there because of how she represented and embodied unconditional love. I am so sorry to hear of her passing, but I am so excited for the future in heaven with her. I know she will be there to greet me. She kept me on the path I needed to be on and I will always be so grateful for her life. What a gift from God she was and continues to be. The words I have written here do not do justice to the powerful life of love she led.
Mr. Walker and family, you are in my thoughts and prayers. I enjoyed volunteering with Rachel at Camp Dogwood. May God’s loving and comforting arms be around you during this difficult time and the days ahead.
Jim, Melanie, and Robert, know that Pam and I share your grief. Rachel was a wonderful friend and colleague at Wingate. Her generous, loving spirit enriched our lives and the lives of some many students and friends who loved her. I remember her telling me once that her greatest wish was to see her children grow up. Rachel was so proud of her children and grandchildren and the men and women they have become who now carry with them her spirit. She was so blessed. What more can one ask that to fall asleep among those we love and wake among those we have lost.

I remember spending summers at Jim and Rachel’s house when Melanie was small. I used to go there a lot when I was young. I remember Rachel talking on the phone about a cake recipe and it called for Nehi oranges. I would ask her how high those oranges were. I’m 58 years old and they always would bring that memory up even now and she would always pack me a snack when I left Monroe to head to Gastonia. We will always love and miss her.
Mrs. Walker was such a blessing to me. She was more than a professor, she was a dear and special friend. She took such good care of me at Wingate and was a shoulder to cry on during the passing of my grandmother. I could never repay her for all of her care and kindness. She was indeed a good and faithful servant to the Lord, and her love for Christ was evident in every aspect of her life. I am devastated to lose my precious friend. I pray that God will bring her family peace, comfort, strength, and healing, and that we can all rest in the precious hope in Christ that we will see her again. She was truly an inspiration and her legacy will live on forever. I love you forever my precious friend.
