Oscar George Spence's Obituary
Oscar George Spence passed away peacefully on Friday, January 17, 2025, at home surrounded by his loving wife and daughter.
Born on May 20, 1939, in Belfry, Kentucky. He was the son of the late Oscar and Nancy Jane Spence. He was preceded in death by his sister Loraine Spence, two brothers Frank and Kenneth Mullins, and childhood best friend Jim Hunt. He graduated from Belfry High School in 1957. He then went to Mayo State Vocational School where he took an electrician course. In 1962 he was drafted into the U.S. Army and trained as a Military Policeman. He went to Fort Knox, KY for 8 weeks of basic training, then Fort Gordon, GA for Military Policeman Training, then Fort Bragg, N.C., and was assigned to Company A, 503rd Military Police Battalion. In 1963, he was sent to the University of Mississippi at Oxford Mississippi to be part of the riot control force that was present when the school became integrated in 1963. He left his required assignment in Fort Bragg, N.C. in 1964. He was in the active reserve for two years and the inactive reserve for two years completing his military obligation and was honorably discharged. Oscar, worked McLean trucking for many years until he became an employee for the NCDOT as a truck driver and served with the state until he retired.
He enjoyed going to Waffle House whether he was alone or accompanied by his wife, and especially by his “princess” (granddaughter), Adelynn, and his daughter. He loved being around his family and enjoyed his time with his sons and grandsons when they visited from FL. He loved telling childhood stories, playing on his keyboard, watching Western movies in his lovely recliner, giving advice, and he loved to talk- he was a big talker! He was a hard-working man who wasn’t afraid to get his hands dirty and to get a job done right! He could do most vehicle repairs even changing engines out, he could rebuild homes and rental properties for decades. Our dad was a very active father who constantly kept himself busy with various activities, until his health started to decline as the years passed.
He is survived by his loving wife Cecilia and three sons: Greg, David (Nicole), and Kevin who all reside in FL, and daughter Camille who resides in N.C. He has three beloved grandchildren: Trevor, Andrew (Briana), from FL, and Adelynn Jane “Princess”, from N.C.
Our dad, was a loving devoted husband to his wife. He loved his children and grandchildren dearly. He had this entrepreneurial spirit about him in business. He was a loving, caring, and fair man.
The family would like to thank Tillery Compassionate Care for their services. Per family, “They were really great to us!"
The visitation will be held at Stanly Funeral and Cremation Care of Albemarle on Friday, January 24th, 2025, at 2:00 pm
