Oscar Lee Billingsley's Obituary
Mr. Oscar Lee Billingsley, age 90, of Monroe, North Carolina, passed away Saturday, October 19, 2013, at his residence.
Funeral Services to celebrate his life will be conducted at 2:00 PM Monday, October 21, 2013, at Davis Funeral Chapel in Monroe, officiated by Reverend Frank Crump. Interment will follow in Lakeland Memorial Park.
Mr. Billingsley was born on January 5, 1923, in Union County, North Carolina, a son of the late Lee and Tinnie Billingsley.
He graduated from Benton Heights High School, where he played on the basketball team. He also played on the Blue Socks baseball team, was a boxer, and loved fishing. He was also a Mason.
Oscar also served four years in the United States Navy and served in World War II in Okinawa, Japan.
Oscar was the store manager at Winn Dixie in Monroe and retired with 25 years of service. He was later employed with the City of Monroe - Parks and Recreation Division as Property Manager. He retired with 20 years of dedicated service.
Mr. Billingsley was preceded in death by three brothers, Hugh Billingsley, Curtis Billingsley, Bill Billingsley and two sisters, DeeDee (Annie Lee) Ferguson and Mable Horne.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Doris Yandle Billingsley of the home; Nina Hedgepath and husband, Kenneth, of Monroe, Teresa Broome and husband, Scott, of Charlotte, Mary Milton and husband, Steve, of Wingate; one grandson, Scott Hedgepath and wife, Nayda, of Michigan; three granddaughters, Kelly Hedgepath of Matthews, Lindsey Arant and husband, David, of Fort Mill, South Carolina, Katie McGee and husband, Henry, of Stallings. There are five great-grandchildren, Jacob Schexnayder, Meredith Schexnayder, Jamaal Reid, Armand Hedgepath, and Abigail Arant. He is also survived by one brother, Gus Billingsley and wife, Dean; one sister, Dorothy (Dot) Parks; and two sisters-in-law, Faye Billingsley and Billie Billingsley, all of Monroe.
The family will receive friends Monday (October 21, 2013) from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM one hour prior to the service at Davis Funeral Home; 1003 East Franklin Street in Monroe.
