Mitzie Vanhoy Lanier's Obituary
Mitzie Vanhoy Lanier, 81, of New London, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, July 3, 2026.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at New London United Methodist Church, officiated by Pastor Jason Boggs. Burial will follow at New London Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until 10:45 a.m., prior to the service at the church.
Born on May 7, 1945, in Stanly County, Mitzie was the daughter of the late Hobert and Jewell Vanhoy.
Mitzie dedicated much of her professional life to a career in human resources, spending many years with Alcoa before continuing her work in the field with several other companies. Later in life, she found great fulfillment in education, sharing her knowledge and experience as a high school teacher. Mitzie was a woman of strength, determination, and adventure. She took great pride in her military service and the accomplishments she achieved throughout her career. Never one to shy away from a challenge, she embraced the outdoors and found joy in water skiing, snow skiing, hiking, and caring for her yard and flowers. Among her proudest adventures was hiking the Grand Canyon from rim to rim, a testament to her adventurous spirit and perseverance. Above all, Mitzie treasured the time she spent with her family, especially her grandchildren, who brought her immeasurable happiness.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 37 years, Sidney Lanier; her son, Mark Collins and wife, Tammy; her grandson, Kip Collins; her great-grandson, Kelih Collins; and many other relatives and friends who will cherish her memory.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Ted Vanhoy.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff of Tillery Compassionate Care, and especially to Jerry Measimer, for the exceptional love, care, and support shown to Mitzie and Sidney throughout her illness.

Though her earthly journey has come to an end, Mitzie's adventurous spirit, unwavering strength, and the love she shared with her family will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know her. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
