Michael Odell Helms' Obituary
Michael Odell Helms, 72, of Monroe, passed away peacefully at his home on September 6, 2025. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on Friday, September 19, 2025 at 11:00 AM at Lakeland Memorial Park, 1901 Lancaster Avenue, Monroe, NC 28112.
Born on June 3, 1953, in Union County, NC, Michael was the son of the late Edison Odell Helms and Frances Jeanette Brown Helms. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend whose life was defined by hard work, deep faith, and unconditional love for his family.
Michael spent his career as a skilled plumber, but his talents went far beyond his profession. He was an accomplished woodworker, a passionate gardener, and a man who found joy in farming and working with his hands. He taught his children how to “do everything,” leaving behind not just memories but the gift of practical knowledge and self-reliance. If something was broken, Michael could fix it—and more often than not, a little Duct Tape was all he needed.
Family was at the heart of everything Michael did. He was the center of the family, the one who worked tirelessly and loved fiercely. He and his wife, Evelyn, were inseparable—always together, sharing life’s journey side by side. His grandchildren adored him, and he cherished every moment with them. He was known for his parting words to family and friends: “I love you. Y’all be careful.”
Michael found comfort in simple pleasures. He enjoyed wearing his favorite blue jeans, chewing his Star chewing tobacco, and watching his favorite show, “Little House on the Prairie.” Every Sunday morning, he looked forward to watching the worship service at Central Church of God in Charlotte, a testament to his quiet faith.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Evelyn Helms; three children, Renee Pressler (Allen) of Monroe, Andy Helms (Kristy) of Indian Trail, and Kenny Helms (Tiffany) of Wingate; sisters Barbara Richardson of Monroe and Janet Keziah of Florida; brother Eddie Alvin Helms of Tennessee; five beloved grandchildren, Kristen Roditis (Matthew), Victoria Tarlton, Lauren Stephens (Jared), Carter Helms, and Piper Helms; one great-granddaughter, Lilly Roditis; and another precious great-grandbaby on the way. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister Frances Johnson.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a gift in memory of Michael to VIA Health Partners (hospice). Gifts can be made online at viagiving.org or mailed to VIA Health Partners, PO Box 470408, Charlotte, NC 28247.
