John David Summerlin III's Obituary
John David Summerlin III, 87, of Badin, passed away peacefully at home on September 23, 2024. Born on July 28, 1937, David was a pillar of the Badin community and left a lasting legacy through his dedication and service.
David proudly served his country as a veteran of the United States Air Force. After his service, he went on to enjoy a long career at Alcoa, from which he eventually retired. David was a man of adventure and accomplishment, having visited all 50 states during his lifetime.
He was a key figure in shaping the history of Badin, having been a framer of the Badin Museum’s, a founder of the beloved Best of Badin Festival and many other projects in the community. His tireless efforts to enrich the lives of the town’s residents were a testament to his passion for the community he cherished.
A man of many interests, David spent much of his life antiquing, auctioning, traveling, attending and organizing VW car shows, and dancing, but his greatest joy was always found in spending time with his beloved family. He is survived by his devoted wife of 67 years, Gloria; his two sons, Gary and his wife Ann, and Tim and his wife Sarah. He also leaves behind seven grandchildren—Casey, Ryan, Camren, Laney, Cory, Jackson, and Harrison— six great-grandchildren: Banx, Reid, Torrence, Ravyn, Ava, Crue, Cole, and Wiley. He is preceded in death by his eldest son, Dennis Summerlin.
David will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him. His contributions to Badin and his kindness will forever be remembered.
A celebration of David's life will be held at 12 PM on Thursday, September 26, 2024, at the Stanly Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends from 10-12 PM prior to the hour of service at Stanly Funeral and Cremation Care of Albemarle.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Tillery Compassionate Care (960 N 1st St, Albemarle, NC 28001) or Badin United Methodist Church (18 Hickory St, Badin, NC 28009)
