Jo Ann Hooks Kimrey's Obituary
Jo Ann Hooks Kimrey was born to James Franklin Hooks and Ina Mae Moore Hooks in Anson
County, North Carolina on July 4, 1935. She entered into her heavenly home on June 10, 2023
at the age of 87.
She grew up in Badin with her parents and two sisters and met and married Carl Kimrey, her
loving husband on November 7, 1953. Carl preceded her in death on January 10, 2020. They
built their home and lived near Badin on Valley Drive for over 50 years. Jo Ann worked for 16
years at Alcoa in the office before leaving to build Kimrey’s Greenhouse on their property.
Having a business at home allowed her and Carl to go to all the sporting events and other
activities for which their children were involved. They were huge supporters of the North Stanly
Comets Band when their children were in high school and loved to travel to away games and
competitions on a regular basis. Jo Ann also volunteered at the Red Cross and worked
part-time at the Badin Country Club in her later years when her girls had moved out on their
own. Her biggest love was her family, including her four grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren. She and Carl also traveled regularly with their best friends that lived in
Pennsylvania. Jo Ann has called Spring Arbor home for the last five years.
Along with her husband, Carl Walter Kimrey, Jo Ann’s sister, Judy Hooks Hudson, also
preceded her in death. Jo Ann is survived by her sister, Jane Hooks Ward, her daughters, Carla
Kimrey (Vonda) and Tina Kimrey Barkley (Rick), four grandchildren Drew Barkley, Ryan Barkley
(Sarah), Dylan Barkley, and Carlee Kimrey, and two great-grandchildren Harper Hardister and
Grant Barkley. There are other extended family members and church family members that she
loved to see as much as she could.
A memorial service will be held at Badin Presbyterian Church, Badin, North Carolina on
Thursday, June 15, 2023 at 11 a.m. with the graveside service immediately after at Fairview
Memorial Park. Visitation will be Wednesday, June 14, 2023 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Stanly
Funeral Home in Albemarle, North Carolina. The family would like to thank Spring Arbor for the
loving care and friendship they have given to Jo Ann for the years she has been living there. If
anyone wishes to send a memorial, please send that to Badin Presbyterian Church, P. O. Box
776, Badin, NC 28009
