James Andrew Cotton of Albemarle NC,” Andy” to those who knew him, died suddenly and most unexpectedly at his home on June 23, 2023. He was born 7 June 1949, in Asheville, NC to William Donaldson Cotton Sr. and Daisy Isabel Lockli Read Obituary
I was a student of Mr Cotton's at South Rowan and Carson. As a science educator, he inspired me to "ask the right question," which has led to my lifelong love for learning and science. He was also a big part of my foundation in critical thinking, a skill which has since defined my life, even from as humble origins played as games in Mr Cotton's classroom after he finished a lesson. Andy Cotton was a massive part of the adult I have become and he will be deeply missed.
Ruth, I am so sorry to hear of Andy's passing. He was a part of so many things in the community and I feel as if I knew him from birth, and also loving you, Dr. Daisy and Dr. Cotton so much. I met Andy at theNCASC Mars Hill Summer Leadership Workshop many years ago. Andy was so gracious to everyone and made everyone around him feel special. One of my students and I were reminiscing and we agreed that you never “posed” for Andy’s photographs. He just got it! Every single time! I have so many special memories captured in his amazing photography. May you find peace in knowing that Andy was beloved by all and made a tremendous impact on more people than you will ever know. He was a true Southern gentleman.💕
Andy loved photography and he loved students. It was a perfect match for him to be the photographer for the NC Association of Student Councils Summer Workshop. I first met him in 1992 at "the Mars Hill Workshop." At Mars Hill, he took thousands of photos every summer to include in a slide show ( the old fashioned type that used slides and a projector) and later a digital video created on a computer. He facilitated the printing of council, staff, and JC photos as well as produced a CD of ALL the photos taken at the workshop. When he got home from the workshop, he made the CDs and mailed them to the students. Everyone loved Andy...and they especially liked trying to take his picture. Included is this photo taken by students at the 2022 workshop.
I was privileged to sing with Andy in the Bass section of the Pfeiffer College Concert Choir in 1960s. He was a fine singer and a good friend. Please know he and all who love him are much on my heart and in my prayers just now.

I lived next door to Andy in Misenheimer from age 5 since both our parents were professors at Pfeiffer College. We went through ASHS and Pfeiffer together. My husband Doug grew up with Ruth in Hingham, MA, and Ruth was my best friend during college. Because we care about how you're doing, we're praying and sending wishes from the heart that your memories will sustain you, encourage your spirit, and see you through this time. HK and I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Andy both with the Uwharrie Players and Stanly County Chorale. Becoming friends with his son, James, also meant being included in becoming close with his parents. The love Mr. Andy and Ms. Ruth had for each other was always refreshingly sweet. Han and I will never forget his kind composure, musical and acting talents, his craftmanship, and his award-winning homemade pizzas. Often, he shared materials with me during his days as an educator and I valued everything he ever gave me. Hearing of his passing was shocking and we will miss him so much. We continue to pray for Ms. Ruth and my friend, James, and brother Chris. Our sincerest condolences, Natasha & HK Wall. We will miss you, Mr. Andy.
