James Walter Burgess' Obituary
Mr. James Walter Burgess, age 71, of Monroe, North Carolina, passed away Monday, October 20, 2014, at Hospice House of Union County.
Funeral Services to celebrate his life will be conducted at 11:00 AM Friday, October 24, 2014, at Central United Methodist Church, officiated by Reverend George Freeman.
Mr. Burgess was born on February 19, 1943, in Union County, North Carolina, a son of the late Walter Elarce Burgess and Josephine Mangum Burgess. He was a retired diesel mechanic with State Utilities Contractors of Monroe and was a member of Central United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Joan Griffin, Mabel Edwards, and Dean Clontz; and his step-mother, Atha Burgess.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Leaird Burgess of the home; two brothers, Ronnie Burgess and wife, Mary, of Mount Pleasant, NC, and Wade Burgess and wife, Reba, of Monroe. Additional survivors include a special niece, Renee Steele, her daughter, Erika Steele Capra and friend Dairrick Baker all of Lancaster, SC. He is also survived by a number of additional nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Thursday evening, October 23, 2014, at Davis Funeral Home, 1003 East Franklin Street in Monroe.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials may be made to Central United Methodist Church; 801 South Hayne Street, Monroe, NC 28112.
