I had Mr. Whittington for 3 years at South during the 1980's. Of all the teachers I had, he was the one who best prepared me for college. I was never a reader of literature before I had his classes, but he encouraged me to expand my mind. When you look back at the time, you realize that he saw things in me that I could never see in myself. He pushed me to reach my potential. I will say that his 11th grade AP English class was tougher than anything I took during my four years at Wingate. I will always think of him whenever I reread 1984. Mark Whitley SSHS class of 1984.
I was in Mr. Whittington's Class in 72-73 year and he was a very good teacher and always fair. He always made the class fun! I'm sorry for the families loss. I know he will be missed.

Really hate to hear this😢 I enjoyed learning in his class. I considered him a fine teacher. God Bless his Family, Friends and Students🙏🙏😢
I had Mr. Whittington and Mrs whittington both as teachers in the early seventies at South Stanley High School Mr. Whittington taught to pull the very best out of every student that entered his classroom. He would always correct and/or make suggestions with a smile on his face. He was an awesome teacher! Rest in peace.
My family and I extend our condolences deepest sympathy to Mrs. Whittington and family.

Howard and I were co-workers for many years at South Stanly High School. We shared many a laugh and crossword puzzles on workdays. I loved his sense of humor!
Warm wishes to Rachel, Kendra, and Russell for healing and acceptance.
Mr. Whittington was an amazing English teacher! The SSHS Class of 1972 was especially fond of him. He was such a big help coordinating the 72nd Edition, our senior variety show. He taught me many valuable lessons that I have carried with me through life. Special memories of a life well lived. Susan Simmons Hinson
I had Mr. Whittington as a teacher, but got to know him better while he was the athletic trainer for the wrestling team. I could just tell he cared about you, past the athletics. He really wanted to help and make you feel special. The last time I saw him, many years ago, he insisted on giving me a hug and I'm glad he did.
Mr. Whittington was a very structured teacher who attempted to pull the best out of every student who walked in his classroom. While some become frustrated with the consistent rewrites and comments, he saw more potential in his students than some could comprehend. I am so grateful for being one of those students. he saw more academic potential than I could ever imagine at that time. RIP Mr. Whittington.
