Herman Leroy Smith's Obituary
Herman Leroy Smith, 67, of Locust, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 4, 2026, at Atrium Health Cabarrus. No services will be held.
Born on October 8, 1958, in Cabarrus County, North Carolina, Herman was the son of the late Joel Kenneth Smith and Willie Faye Love Smith. He worked for many years as a small engine mechanic, a trade that reflected his hardworking nature and gifted hands.
Herman will be remembered by those who knew and loved him as a thoughtful man with a big heart, the kind of person who would gladly give you the shirt off his back. Known as a gentle giant, he had an outgoing spirit, a wonderful sense of humor, and a way of making others feel welcome in his presence.
He found great joy in the simple pleasures of life. Herman loved fishing, hunting, and spending time outdoors, where he felt most at home. He also had a special love for animals, enjoyed attending auctions, and treasured time spent sitting and talking with his friends. He was especially fond of older country music and loved listening to live performances whenever he could. Among his many endearing traits was his well-known preference for going barefoot whenever possible, wearing shoes only when he absolutely had to.
Herman also had a fondness for Rice Krispies treats, which were made especially for him in double batches because they were his favorite, even despite his diabetes. It is these personal touches, along with his kindness, warmth, and easygoing nature, that will be lovingly remembered by his family and friends.
He is survived by his three brothers, Justin Smith and wife Joanne of Millingport, Jeffrey Smith of Locust, and Dale Stancil and wife Charlene of Locust. He is also survived by three nieces, eleven great-nieces and nephews, and eight great-great-nieces and nephews.
Herman leaves behind a legacy of kindness, laughter, and love. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the blessing of knowing him.
Stanly Funeral and Cremation Care of Locust is serving the Smith family.
