Grant Gene Awtrey, 74, of New London passed away Sunday, January 3, 2016 in Stanly Regional Medical Center.? A memorial service to honor his life will be held on Saturday, January 9, 2016 at 11 AM in Chandler?s Grove United Methodist Church with Rev. Steve Phillippi officiating. ?The family will receive friends following the service at?the church.
Born April 3, 1941 in Blount County, Alabama, Mr. Awtrey was the son of the late Henry Awtrey and Leta Robertson Awtrey and was the former owner and operator of Badin Lake General Store for over 20 years.? Grant was an avid Alabama fan and could be found any given game day rooting on the Crimson Tide.
Mr. Awtrey is survived by his wife Melba Jean Hamrick Awtrey.? Other survivors include daughters Margaret Kirkman of Pittsboro, NC and Denise Awtrey of New London, NC , brothers Bill Awtrey of Siler City, NC, and Gary Awtrey of Blountsville, Alabama, sister Barbara Champion of Cleveland, Alabama, grandson Paxton Kirkman and girlfriend Caroline Livengood, and Son-in-law Gary Kirkman of Goldston, NC.? Grant was proud of his fur buddies: BB, Sadie, Matlida, Barker and Cooper.? Grant was known on and around the lake for riding around with his buddies in his truck, pontoon, and Kubota.
