George Michael Payne's Obituary
George Michael (Mickey) Payne, age 78, went home to be with our Lord on October 6, 2022.
Mickey is preceded in death by his parents George W. Payne and Martha Whittemore Payne, his sister Barbara Jean Edwards and his brother John H. Payne. Mickey is survived by his wife of 58 years Elizabeth (Libby) Rice Payne, his son Gary (Crystal) of Huntersville, NC and daughter Kimberly Denton (Patrick) of Mars Hill, NC, his grandsons, Michael and Steven Payne of Huntersville, NC, sisters Diane Payne of Jacksonville, FL and Sherry Correll (David) of Etowah, NC and many nieces and nephews.
Mickey was born October 22, 1943, in Buncombe County, NC. He graduated from North Buncombe High School in 1962, and attended AB Tech. He was employed by Sky City in Asheville until 1970 when employment opportunities led his family to Charlotte, NC. He was employed by Pic N Pay Stores for 34 years in various positions until the company was sold and then he was employed by Family Dollar until retirement in 2006. Mickey and his family were members of Shamrock Drive Baptist Church while living in Charlotte. Mickey served as deacon and in the church's youth athletics program as a coach. Mickey and Libby built their dream home in Union County and moved to Waxhaw, NC in 1994. There they became active members of First Baptist Church of Weddington.
Memorial service will be held at the First Baptist Church of Weddington, 248 Providence Road S, Waxhaw, NC, on Saturday, November 5, 2022, at 2 PM led by their Pastor, Dr. Jordon Willard. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the church at P. O. Box 733, Waxhaw, NC 28173.
