Gary Martin Thompson's Obituary
Mr. Gary Martin Thompson, 72, of Albemarle, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 25, 2026, at Atrium Health Stanly.
A funeral service to celebrate Gary's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 29, 2026, at Bethany United Methodist Church, officiated by Rev. David Cochran. Burial will follow at Prospect Baptist Church Cemetery. In accordance with the family's wishes, there will be no formal visitation.
Born on August 7, 1953, in Stanly County, Gary was the son of the late Hugh Martin Thompson Jr. and Tommie Jean Burris Thompson.
Gary retired from Lowe's of Albemarle after many years of dedicated service. Prior to his retirement, he was employed with Textilease in Charlotte. A faithful member of Bethany United Methodist Church, Gary found joy in life's simple pleasures. He loved spending time fishing and boating, cheering on his beloved North Carolina Tar Heels, and taking drives in his cherished Ford Mustang. Above all, he treasured the time he spent with his family, who were the center of his life.
Gary is lovingly survived by his devoted wife, Sheila Poplin Thompson, of the home; his daughter, Lisa Hash and husband, Richard; his son, Ashley Thompson and wife, Micki; his grandchildren, Hunter Hash, Luke Hash, Abby Kimrey, and Jake Thompson; and his beloved great-grandchildren, Kenley Hash, Julia Hash, Harrison Hash, William Kimrey, Jeremiah Kimrey, Ellison Kimrey, Elias Thompson, and Lillian Thompson.
Gary will be remembered for his quiet strength, his steadfast love for his family, and the joy he found in the outdoors and the people he loved. His kindness, gentle spirit, and unwavering devotion to those closest to him will leave a lasting legacy in the hearts of all who knew him. Though he will be deeply missed, the memories he created and the love he shared will continue to bring comfort and strength to his family and friends for years to come.
