Donnie Joe Whitley Sr.'s Obituary
Donnie Joe Whitley Sr., 86, of Albemarle passed away on Wednesday, November 10, 2021 in his home. His funeral service will be at 3 PM on Saturday, November 13, 2021 at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Shad Hicks and Rev. Tab Whitley officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 PM until 3PM prior to the hour of service.
Born November 1, 1935 in Stanly County, NC he was the son of the late Alfred Whitley and Chloa Morton Whitley. He was a retired supervisor with Union Power Cooperative with 43 years of service and a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Mr. Whitley was a veteran of the US Navy, former Stanly County Commissioner for two terms, and drove a truck for the Rolling Hills Cotton Gin. He was a Deacon, RA Leader and Sunday School teacher at Pleasant Grove. He was an avid pilot and loved flying and drag car racing.
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Mary Loudene Hatley Whitley of the home, son Donnie Joe Whitley Jr. (Crystal) of Albemarle and daughter Julie Whitley Griffith (John) of Albemarle, grandchildren that he loved, adored, and was proud of Gavin Smith-Whitley (Ellen), Hunter Griffith (Allison), Payton Whitley, Brayden Griffith, and Addison Whitley and great-grandson Nate Whitley. He was preceded in death by 7 sisters and 4 brothers.
