Dean Edward Banakes' Obituary
Dean Edward Banakes, 73, of New London passed away on Saturday, June 3, 2023 in Forrest Oakes Healthcare Center after long term Parkinson’s Disease.
Mr. Banakes was born in Wenatchee, Washington on August 3, 1949 to Sam T. Banakes and Dorothy M. Banakes. Sam Banakes worked for ALCOA as a chemical engineer and was relocated to several cities and countries. Growing up Dean moved with his parents to Texas, Pennsylvania, Australia, and finally to Albemarle in 1967. Mr. Banakes served in the US Army at Fort Bragg for 4 years and was awarded 1977 Soldier of the Year at Fort Bragg. Mr. Banakes was the owner and operator of Albemarle Glass Company, Inc. for 44 years. Mr. Banakes was a member of Prospect Baptist Church, past Chairman of the Deacons and Sunday School teacher. He enjoyed many creative hobbies and challenging projects.
Survivors include wife of 49 years, Pat Ann Furr Banakes of New London, brother-in-law Rickey M. Furr and wife Cynthia of Albemarle, nephew David M. Furr of Saint Petersburg Florida, and niece Candace Holmlund of Sweden.
His funeral service will be held at graveside at 3 PM on Thursday, June 8, 2023 in the Prospect Baptist Church Cemetery with Pastor Stoney Benfield officiating. His body will lie in state at Stanly Funeral and Cremation Care of Albemarle from 10 am until 2:30 PM. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 2:30 at the funeral home prior to the hour of the service.
