Big Dave.
I first met David Sr. when Diane and our kids started visiting United Love. Dave was a big ole boy and easy to talk to. (Two rednecks, easy to happen.) Our sense of humor was somewhat the same and our politics definitely fell in line…. Well, most of the time.
Got to know his kids and Patsy and learned to love them. Dave and I got season hockey tickets to the Checkers, (his suggestion), and he tried to teach me what the game was all about and the rules. He finally gave up and just told me to think of it as a basketball game on ice. Rules are similar he said. I still watch it and I ain’t seen basketball rules yet. The only thing I see similar is that the net counts as a point. OK, so hockey games end with the winner making maybe 3 goals while basketball ends with the winner having 80. Still looking for a comparison.
We served together on the Deacons board at United Love. Had some of the best times of my life not only with just Dave but with all the other deacons I got to know. We, as a board, sometimes had tough decisions to make that were difficult. You who have been there understand. Although we all had opinions that were not many times not the same, we were always able to reach a consensus on what we should do and supported each other in how to proceed.
I will never forget our Deacons Retreats to Gatlinburg, Tn. and the laughing, crying, openness, fellowship, studying, learning and the relationships between those men that were built. Big Dave was a part of the relationship building and letting us all know we are simply men who can fail, but God will lead us in the right direction.
I could go on and on about his parents, how I loved them and his family. His kids were like ours, Diane and Patsy like sisters, and Dave was truly a friend who would have done anything for me. A brother I never had. I only wish I had done more for him.
Big boy, you struggled with your last years, but now that is over. See you at the big retirement home someday and we can laugh and talk like we used to.
Ken
