What a wonderful neighbor and friend Betty was to our family! Walking by her home, she could often be seen tending her many plants. She was an artistic gardener. Her love of nature also included animals. One night, she called to ask if we could help her capture and release a black snake that had mysteriously entered her home. I asked if we should have a hoe ready if he escaped. Oh no! He would be captured alive…and he was.
When I found an enormous turtle between our homes, Betty helped me wrangle him onto a hefty box. We laughed as we struggled to carry him to the creek where we released him. Another time a kitten walked into our yard looking very needy. We would soon be out of town for some time. What to do…ask Betty. She took on the challenge of raising “Pooh,” which her daughter Cindy continues to this day. Betty liked chocolate and was a frequent baker of brownies. She was generous in sharing with us. I still think of her walking up our driveway, a smile on her face and a plate of brownies in her hand. We are thankful for Betty. She was a lovely neighbor and friend!
