Alton Ray Barringer's Obituary
Alton Ray Barringer, son of the late Sam and Mettie Honeycutt
Barringer, was born May 4, 1935, and died Saturday, January 25th,
2020 at his home. The family will receive
friends on Wednesday, January 29th from 12:00 until 1:30PM at Stanly
Funeral and Cremation Care in Albemarle.
A graveside service with full military rights conducted by the US Navy
Honor Guard will follow at 2:00PM at Stanly Gardens of Memory.
He was married for 52
years to the late Mary Vernell Starnes Barringer. He is survived by two sons; Greg Barringer
(Barbara) of Cabarrus County and Chip Barringer (Cindy) of Midland, NC, two granddaughters;
Britni Clodfelter (Travis), and Bailey Rutherford (Samuel), and two great-granddaughters,
Emma Rae Clodfelter, and Mia Rose Clodfelter. His brother Gleason Barringer, and sisters
Elsie Morris, Cora Lee Tucker, and Ora Mae Hatley formerly of Albemarle preceded
him death.
Mr. Barringer entered the US Navy at the age of 17 and
retired Chief Petty Officer in 1973, after 21 years? service. He served on the Cuban Blockade, four tours
in Vietnam, and on five ships, USS Frontier AD-25, USS Capricornus AKA-57, USS
Okinawa LPH-3, USS Enterprise CVAN-65, and USS Bordelon DD-881. After retiring from the Navy, Mr. Barringer
worked as Quality Control Manager for Champion International in Charleston, SC,
and Sales Manager for Decolam Inc. in Orangeburg, SC, then later for Georgia
Pacific. He then became General Manager
for Eudy?s Cabinet in Stanfield, NC, and General Manager for Patrick Industries
in Charlotte, NC and New London, NC.
Mr. Barringer was born and raised in Albemarle, and returned
to live there, along with his family, in 1993 and remained there until his
death. He loved to fish, loved his
family and loved Jesus Christ.
Ray was very proud to be a veteran of the United States Navy
and to have served the United States of America. His family is extremely proud of his service
but mostly proud to call him ?Dad? and ?Pop?.
He was one of a kind and he always took care of his family. We are sad to let him go but we take joy in
knowing that he has gone to be with his precious Vernie.
