Rev. Furman Ashley Wilhoit went home to be with the Lord Monday morning at 8:45 AM surrounded by his four loving children at Stanly Regional Medical Center in Albemarle, NC. Mr. Wilhoit was 86 years old and lived in Albemarle, NC. His family will receive friends at Stanly Funeral Home on Tuesday evening from 6 PM to 8 PM and his funeral will be at 3 PM on Wednesday, March 31st, 2010 in Stanly Funeral Home's Chapel. Rev. Otis Goins, Rev. Stoney Benfield, and Rev. Joe Smith will officiate and burial will be in Fairview Memorial Park with full military graveside rites conducted by the Stanly County DAV Ritual Team.
Born April 7th, 1923 in Stanly County, NC, Rev. Wilhoit was the son of the late Claud Clark and Catherine Paul Wilhoit. He received a GED from Stanly Community College in 1992 and was a Bapitst Minister at Trinity Baptist Church for 35 years. He also worked at Wiscassett Mills Co. with 46 years of service. He was a US Army Veteran of WWII where he served in the Pacific Theater. He pastored several churches over 69 years in Stanly, Montgomery, and Randolph Counties.
Rev. Wilhoit was preceded in death by his wife, Margie Pauline Thompson Wilhoit, and one son, Larry Wilhoit. He is survived by two sons: David Wilhoit of Atlanta, GA and Gary Wilhoit and wife Debra of Mint Hill, NC; two daughters: Claudette Walker and husband Max of New London, NC and Robin Rose and husband Thomas of New London, NC; one brother, Paul Wilhoit of Albemarle, NC; two sisters: Margie Doby of Albemarle, NC and Barbara Poplin of Albemarle, NC; six grandchildren: Nelson Walker, Joan Hahn, Julie McGirr, Susan Strawn, Amanda Lukach, and Bruce Wilhoit; eight great-grandchildren: Martha Hahn, Christy Hahn, William Walker, Stephanie Walker, Christopher Walker, Rylee McGirr, Braxton Strawn, and Garrett Strawn; and two great-great-grandchildren: Kayden McCoy Walker and Graci Marie Walker.
