Evelyn Smith Griffin, 84, went home peacefully to be with the Lord, on Thursday, Sept. 17, 2009 at Britthaven of Piedmont, Albemarle. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009 at West Albemarle Baptist Church, with The Rev. Brent Pope officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Interment will be at Fairview Memorial Park following the service.
Mrs. Griffin was born Nov. 23, 1924 to the late Lonnie Evan and Minnie Yow Smith. Mrs. Griffin was married for 62 years to Henry A. Griffin, who preceded her in death. She is survived by one daughter, Vickie G. Stonestreet and husband Robert; two grandchildren, Emily Stonestreet Buffum (Luke) and Jason R. Stonestreet; and three great-grandchildren, Virginia Grace, Caroline and Victoria Buffum. She is also survived by one brother, Marshall R. Smith (Carolyn) and one sister, Louise S. Pennington (Max) and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Annie Mae Smith Yates and Clara Smith Davis. Mrs. Griffin and her husband were former owners of Austin Street Lunch and Grocery. She also worked in retail sales and was a homemaker. Mrs. Griffin was an active member of West Albemarle Baptist Church, where she served in many positions, including many years as a Sunday school teacher and choir member. She was a former member of the Singing Americans of Stanly County and was active in volunteer work throughout the county. She enjoyed cooking, fishing and playing bridge, but most enjoyed spending time with her family. She was loved by everyone who knew her and will be deeply missed.
