David Max Hinson, 54, of Albemarle, died peacefully at his home January 27, 2010.  David touched many lives through his restaurant Old School Mill’s Fresh House. David will be remembered by his family and friends as an extraordinary entrepreneur, dreamer, and hard worker.  David shared his smiles and hugs with friends and strangers alike.

David was born May 4, 1955 in Stanly County, the son of Max M. and Claudine B. Hinson.  David graduated from Appalachian State University in 1977 where he majored in Music Composition.  He studied flying in Opalocka, FL and became a Certified Flight Instructor.  After several years of instructing, David flew corporate jets for Bassett Furniture Industries and Vecillio and Grogan Company.  David later worked as a pilot for CCAir in Charlotte and Midway Airlines in Raleigh.  David also worked in a family business, Hinson’s Poultry for 10 years.

David married Robin Carol Maxey of Bassett, VA in 1983. Together they purchased the “fixer upper” farm in 1984 that became the inspiration for David’s business, Old School Mill Inc.  David established his own food product line and brand name.  In 2001 David opened the first Old School Mills Fresh House where he sold delicious foods and food products.  In 2005 David moved his store and restaurant to Locust after months of diligent labor.  David’s efforts at Fresh House were rewarded by wide public acceptance and many positive reviews in local and national publications.

David was a member of Pine Grove United Methodist Church, where he served in many positions during his life.  He received a lifetime service award from the church in January of 2010.

David is survived by his wife Robin; his daughter Virginia Carol Hinson and his son Parker David Hinson, both of the home.  He is also survived by his parents and his brother Richard K. Hinson of Albemarle.
