Betty Whitley Swaringen, age 81, went to sleep in Jesus on the morning of August 17, 2010 after an extended illness during the past year. She was being cared for by the exceptional staff at Genesis Health Care in Salisbury, NC. Her family will receive friends at Stanly Funeral Home from 12:45 - 1:45 PM on Friday, August 20th prior to the funeral at 2:00 PM at the Stanly Funeral Home's Chapel. Pastor Alex Romanov and Pastor Glen Garver will officiate. Burial will be at Prospect Baptist Church cemetery.
Born August 2nd, 1929 in Albemarle, NC to the late Henry C. Whitley and Zotus Dennis Whitley Carrier, she worked as a secretary, with her last position before retiring, for Eastern States Distributors in Asheville, NC. She was a 1947 graduate of New London High School and graduated in 1948 from Salisbury Business College. She was a member of the Clinton-Laurens County Seventh-Day Adventist Church (SC). Betty loved spending time with her family and friends. She lived with her daughter and son-in-law during their career in the Army and helped care for her grandchildren. She lived in Germany and traveled to Europe during this time. She was an avid reader and loved to write letters to keep in touch with friends and family. Another love was playing the piano and singing.
She is survived by one son, Julian M. Swaringen II and daughter-in-law Lori of Salisbury, NC; one daughter, Debra S. Mulhall and son-in-law Larry of Clinton, SC; two sisters, Ruth Estridge of Ansonville, NC and Donna Horne of Pelham, NC; one granddaughter, Sarah Lynn Mulhall of Cayce, SC; and one grandson, Mark Patrick Mulhall of Clinton, SC.
