Mr. Alton Howell Smith, age 82, of Southern Pines, NC; formerly Albemarle, NC; passed away on Friday, March 18th, 2011 at HCR Manor Care in Pinehurst, NC.  His funeral will be at 2 PM on Monday, March 21st, 2011 in Stanly Funeral Home's Chapel and his family will receive friends beginning at 1 PM just prior to the hour of service.  Rev. Roger Thomas will officiate and burial will be in Fairview Memorial Park.

Born April 5th, 1928 in Stanly County, NC, Mr. Smith was the son of the late Jasper and Glennie Blalock Smith and was a retired employee of Collins and Aikman. 

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lily Morris Smith.  He is survived by his second wife, Monzelle Whitley Smith; one daughter, Marsha Smith Swanner and husband Richard of Albemarle; one step-son, Ronald Edward Whitley and wife Ann of Pinehurst, NC; two grandchildren, Josh Whitley and wife Jennifer of Lumberton, NC and Katie Barrett and husband Rob of Pinehurst, NC; and four great-grandchildren: Dean Whitley, Charley Whitley, Lawson Barrett, and Caroline Barrett.
